About the Tiny Things Painting
"The cabinet of curiosity originally inspired my Tiny Things Painting. They were the origins of the modern museum. A wardrobe of rare collectibles, where you could find a unicorn horn, a plant specimen, and a precious stone all showcased on the same shelf. These cabinets were only shown to the wealthy friends of the aristocrats that owned them. I wanted to reimagine the antiquated cabinet of curiosity as a contemporary painter. I contemplated what I would collect and I decided to hone in on what differentiated me and those aristocrats of old the most, my access to the public (or their access to me). I collected the public’s opinion and the direct input of thousands of individuals. This manifested as a canvas filled with items suggested by my audience. Over 400 items were added and requested by the primary consumers of the painting over 164 days. The resulting cabinet collected and considered the thoughts, cultural ideals, and aesthetic principles of millions of people. It became a snapshot of nostalgia, a memorial for the dead, a punchline to many a joke, and a personal journal. My cabinet of curiosity is not only accessible to the public, but it is also formed by the public." -Harrison
